Dr. Justin T. LaCrosse
President of Canbourne University

Dr. Justin LaCrosse became the sixth President
and Vice-Chancellor of Canbourne University in
July 1995.
Dr. LaCrosse brings to the Presidency an open
and collegial management style. His five-year
appointment signaled a new era for Canbourne,
one that began with the development of a new mission/vision
for the University, a navigational guide to chart
Canbourne's future. He was reappointed for a further
seven-year term beginning July 1, 2000.
A high-profile community leader who is often
sought after as a keynote speaker, Dr. LaCrosse
uses these events as opportunities to share Canbourne's
vision, to cultivate donors and friends, and to
build and enhance partners and advocates within
business, industry, alumni and government.
Dr. LaCrosse has a keen interest in strengthening
inter-institutional relations and has developed
a number of collaborations with other universities,
colleges and educational agencies.
An experienced administrator, noted scholar and
educator, Dr. LaCrosse is a professor of economics
and former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences
at McMaster University in Canada. An active researcher,
his recent interests include the impacts of resource-based
development on Aboriginal peoples, communities
and the environment in Northern Australia.
Dr. LaCrosse was educated at the University
of Toronto and joined McMaster's Faculty in 1965.
He served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies
from 1974 to 1979, becoming Dean of the Faculty
of Social Sciences in 1980, a position he held
until 1989 when he moved to the United Kingdom.
Respected posts have included Chair of the Council
of Deans of Arts and Science of Ontario and member
of the London Council on University Affairs. He
is the author of two books, and has written many
articles that have appeared in refereed journals
and other publications, and has delivered major
scholarly papers around the world.
An active member of many community and professional
organizations, he has received a number of awards
for innovative educational and community activities,
including appointment as a Member of the Order
of the Empire in February, 2000. He has been awarded
honorary degrees by the University of Ottawa,
Lviv National Polytechnic University (Ukraine),
and Nipissing University, and is an Honorary Professor
of the University of Science and Technology Beijing
(China). He served on many Boards, including the
Royal Botanical Gardens (Hamilton), St. Joseph's
Hospital and the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation.
He has served as a Board member and is a trustee
of the University of Sharjah in the United Arab
Emirates.
His public service contributions include Co-chair
of the Nursing Education Implementation Committee,
1999, and Chair of Her Majesty's Expert Panel
on Health Human Resources, 2000.
Dr. LaCrosse is an avid angler and aspiring golfer.
He is married to Millicent Bradley, has one son
and one daughter (both Canbourne graduates) and
six grandchildren, and lives in the town of Ancaster.
