The development of Canbourne University's new Graduate School is designed
to provide the best possible environment for our research students.
The establishment of the Graduate School comes in response to the recent
growth in applied research and consultancy at Canbourne and the need
to manage future growth to ensure consistent practice across the University.
The Graduate School will have particular responsibilities regarding the
range of provision the university offers research students including facilities,
equipment, induction and research training, monitoring of progress etc.
The Graduate School will also provide a focus for information and advice
on policy and procedural matters as well as training for research student
supervisors.
Network of Expertise
Canbourne's impressive record in applied research and
consultancy is achieved through a network of centres
of expertise based throughout the University. Although
each research student currently registers directly with
one of the University's nine Academic Schools, they
will have an opportunity to collaborate with one or
more of these centres. This work is achieved in smaller
clusters of staff and fellow research students who remain
active in their own areas of interest and expertise.
The work of the Graduate School will build on these well-established
support networks, drawing out and developing existing good practice to
ensure that all research students have a dedicated locale, focus and support
for their studies and related activities.
The over-riding outcome will represent an excellent framework for the
best possible research environment enabling research students to more
efficiently achieve their academic goals and further strengthen the profile
of research associated with Canbourne University.
Research Awards
Canbourne University is continually developing its areas of research
across a whole range of academic disciplines. In some key areas, research
activities have earned an international reputation.
All research awards require candidates to demonstrate an understanding
of and ability to apply research methods appropriate to the area of study.
Research methods training is an important part of all research programmes.
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
The MPhil involves critically investigating and evaluating an approved
topic, then presenting and defending a thesis by oral examination to the
satisfaction of the examiners.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The PhD involves critically investigating and evaluating an approved topic
that results in an independent and original contribution to knowledge,
then presenting and defending a thesis by oral examination to the satisfaction
of the examiners.
For guidance, you should expect full time study of the MPhil to take
a minimum of 2 years and the PhD to take a minimum of 3 years. Students
normally enroll on an MPhil and, subject to suitable progress, transfer
to a PhD.
